Over the course of its programme, the Espace Louis Vuitton has explored the theme of travel in its multiple facets, offering its visitors the opportunity to discover the diversity of contemporary art from all over the globe.
For its 10th exhibition, the Espace Louis Vuitton is investigating an unprecedented aspect of travel – the inner journey. This exhibition, entitled « Confusion of the Senses », is an invitation to immerse in ourselves, to listen to our body and our senses to gain a better understanding of ourselves, and also to better grasp the complexity of the world that surrounds us. It represents an experience to be lived and felt, which overturns our perception and our certainties. The starting point of this sensorial exhibition is the work of the artist Olafur Eliasson, created to mark the inauguration of the Espace Louis Vuitton in the central lift. Entitled « Your Loss of Senses », Olafur wanted to take his exploration of individual perception and the sense of self further with «a chamber of sensual entropy». This lift, which enfolds the visitor in total darkness, takes on its full meaning in this exhibition and represents both its actual and symbolic entrance way. Through the creations by eight artists, « Confusion of the Senses » traces a course that encourages the spectators to become aware of their own body and their place in the space, as well as to develop their own mental images.
The window at Rue Bassano, displaying a new work by Didier Fiuza Faustino, invites the visitor to discover as a prologue a text that seems to be tearing itself away from the wall with a violent, yet contained force. The exhibition continues in the hall, the lift and then the exhibition space with a set of works that redefines the landscape of the venue in luminous contrasts ranging from deep black to the most blinding white. Combining abstraction and an approach sensitive to reality, the installations by Renaud Auguste-Dormeuil, Céleste Boursier Mougenot, Véronique Joumard and Laurent Saksik invite us to lose ourselves in order to better find ourselves, while their plastic approach creates the distortion necessary to reveal the invisible and grasp the indiscernible. More directly linked to the body, its dysfunctions and its internal «mechanics», the work by Berdaguer & Péjus allows us to experience a new version of their Traumathèque. Last but not least, Laurent Grasso presents an original series of paintings that questions our relationship to space and time, as well as providing a proofreading of his own work. Discover « Confusion of the Senses » until January 10th, 2010 – Espace Louis Vuitton, 60, rue de Bassano – 75008 Paris and online.
