Each year, 12Mail – Red Bull Space Paris offers one artist a residency culminating in an exhibition. The soundtrack to that exhibit, recorded at Red Bull Studios Paris, is cut to vinyl for the occasion. After Trevor Jackson last year, 2015 brings us English musician Jarvis Cocker. The former lead singer of Pulp has chosen to present a new kind of Gold Record: an imaginary award that seeks to uncover the nature of music and the intangibility of success. Jarvis Cocker spent a week at Red Bull Studios Paris producing and recording the soundtrack for ‘20 Golden Greats’. With the support of several invitees (harpist Serafina Steer, French producer Pilooski), he has crafted a purely instrumental sound to accompany the project. “I wanted a sonic landscape that really extrapolated the exhibition experience. This past week at Red Bull Studios Paris was a great experience because of the freedom we had in the way we worked. We came, we tried out different ideas, which we then recorded in simple fashion. It’s a real luxury to be able to just try out different things, with the allotted time and the materials at hand.” The soundtrack will exclusively be available at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition, on limited edition vinyl only. Exhibition Jarvis Cocker “20 Golden greats” from june 17th to august 28th at 12Mail – Red Bull Space Paris, 12 rue du Mail, 75002 Paris.
