Ben Sherman was created by Arthur Bernard Sugarman who was born in Brighton, emigrated to the USA in 1946 and then come back to England in the 60s. He created Ben Sherman in 1963 during the rise of mod culture. Quickly the mods adopted the Ben Sherman shirt and soon after it became iconic. The special features of the first shirt were : the button down collar, the button at the back of the collar, the back pleat and the back loop and it’s still the same now. The reputation of the shirt spread across Europe and the USA were they were also sold. In 1967 a store is opened in Brighton, in the meantime the skinhead movement began to take shape. The Ben Sherman Oxford shirt became again the main piece of the early skinhead outfit and after of the skinhead revivalists of the late 70s and early 80s. The original skinhead was not the well knowed figure of the stereotypical racist thug but a more sophisticated underground youth movement. In the 90s the britpop fever brought the mod culture in the front scene again and with it the Ben Sherman clothing with its « mod target » Royal Air Force logo from the 60s. Ben Sherman also became a hit after being worn by a number of musicians. The famous shirt succeed to became a style staple with no big changes since the begining. Today, Ben Sherman is an international brand, with womenswear, childrenswear and footwear lines. Recently they have made collaborations with well knowed brands like Paul Weller, Gibson, Baracuta, Bill Amberg and PPQ. In 2007 they launched a new logo called « The Plectrum » to honour the brand’s link with the music industry over the past 5 decades.
