First view great look… Although… My opinion?

Only Madrid and Tokio are using the 5 olympic colors that were used in the old five ringed logo but just a bit different. Praha uses an old olivebranch, that was used in the roman olympics, great reference to that, so that one is my favorite (I can live without the 5 colors on this one…)

As far as the rest I don’t see any reference to the olympics back into the logo. Chicago, Baku and Doha lack all colors and style? I didn’t get the feeling of an WORLDWIDE event logo. Next time do some research guys!

  2. Sete dit :

In fact, Praha is my favourite also, and if you notice well, the logo contains all 5 colors. The Green of the olive, the red/yellow/blue in the res of the leaves and finally the black of the lettering.

;) It’s perfect as it can be!

chicago’s used to have a torch instead of the chicago star, but the Olympic committee didn’t seem to like that. the upper bars were the fire and the lower reflected the fire representing the city’s skyline and making reference to the lake. i agree, this logo didn’t make much reference to the olympics, but it’s the only one that makes reference to itself. none of the others make me think of those cities.

  4. ry dit :

the logo is not allowed to use the standard olympic symbols until that city is chosen. hence the lack of rings, those colors, or the torch. these logos are supposed to somehow represent the location. the original (and probably final, if chicago is chosen) chicago logo is the same colors but with a torch in the middle with the skyline as the flame instead of the star (which is the same star as on the chicago city flag).

I’m a big fan of type and calligraphy so I love Doha’s logo but not for the Olympics really. Tokyo’s a winner for me, all tied up…

  6. niko dit :

If you see, Rio also makes reference to the city. You have to see the logo as a 3D, where the yellow is the sun and green the mountains (sugar loaf); and on the left side the sea on blue.
    And another thing:
Am I the only one that feels that the middle finger from Madrid’s logo pops out a little bit?
I would have changed the combinations of the fingers.

  7. andre dit :

tokyo does it for me as well.

  8. Adil dit :

    I like Madrid’s logo.

Might just be me, but there’s sort of a reference to Picasso in there?!?!?!

  9. Bendy dit :

Chicago, FTW. It’s by far the only logo that will, in 10 years, still look great.

  10. Rafa Borges dit :

    @Bendy: I understand the importance of having a long-life logo, but I don’t see why others can’t last long… except Baku. :p

@Adil: Instead of Picasso, I see more references to Miró, another great spanish painter.

  11. Josh dit :

Wow.. rios picture got me indeed. Before reading niko’s reply i couldn’t realise the icon was also a picture, with sun, mountains (pao de acucar as they call) and ocean. That got me. 5 stars for rio, eventhought i live in chicago.

Rio perfect, a mixture of a picture in 3D (sugar loaf) with a butterfly. 10!

  14. Gustavo dit :

Rio’s logo shows the four colors of Brazilian flag. Green for mountains (Sugar Loaf), yellow for the sun, blue for the ocean (Guanabaras’s bay) where the mountains reflect and white for contour. All of them together form a heart.

Both yellow and blue pieces recall Rio’s Caranaval (Apoteose Plaza).

Hide the name, most people will say « This is Rio! ».

  15. Raoni dit :

    It’s not a butterfly it’s an heart
in my opinion Rio is the best by far (maybe because i’m from Brasil)
    tokyo’s logo is great too

  16. Felipe Thompson dit :

ok ok, is a heart xD

  17. Diogo dit :

    for me…Rio.

    wanna know why?
the mix of ideas that much of u guys didn’t got.
we have here in rio, the « pao de acucar » (sugar loaf) and that is represented by the green color, so as the sea (guanabara’s bay) is repr. by the blue, and the sun…the yellow part.
when u put together all those items that alone would already do the job, and gets a heart…man, that’s gotta be the best one…

liked tokio and madrid too…really good art concepts!

    sry about the lame english!
    = /

  18. I like Rio logo (may be what I’m Portuguese origin) and Tokio too.

  19. Bruno Giraldi dit :

Definetly Madrid, Praha and Rio. Besides I’m brazilian, I’m also a designer and I must say that the all three are great and full of symbols and meanings. Madrid is totally Miró, but I would change the position of the colors. At first sight, the red and black colors just reminded me Germany instead of Spain. Praha is delicate and also brings the 5 rings colors and the olive branch. Rio brings the city (Guanabara Bay, Apoteose, Sugar Loaf and the hearts) and all I can say it’s a great logo and so is the city.

  20. Daniel dit :

Praha,Madrid and specially Rio are the best :D

  21. Greg dit :

Chicago’s bears a striking resemblance to Barack Obama’s logos.

  22. Daniel dit :

I live in Madrid and love this city, so I would love to have the games here… But about the logo: It’s look so much as the Brazilian tourism logo! Take a look:

    http://www.braziltour.com/site/es/galeria_multimidia/index.php

For me it have nothing with Picasso and Miró but the colours. The Spanish tourism logo it’s a great reference to Miró, and it’s totally different:

So I’ll vote for Rio! :P

    Cheers guys.

  23. Dejan Petkovic dit :

Rio makes an association with the mountains ( Pao de Açucar), sea (Baia de Guanabara), and one heart.
I`m from Serbia and played professional soccer in rio, representing Flamengo,Fluminense and Vasco clubs. I can say that Rio have a wonderful structure, focusing on epic Maracana stadium, place where I scored a goal for Flamengo against Vasco da gama, giving Flamengo the TRI-state championship.
You can see on youtube, the keu-words are Flamengo Petkovic.
    =)

  26. Phillip dit :

Rio for me!! I’m from Brazil, but from Sao Paulo.
I belive that the city logo doesn’t have to make reference to the Olympic games, but instead to the city. They’re choosing a city, and for that reason, the logo should concentrate on making reference to the city.

I go for Rio, ’cause that 3D logo is totaly up to date designs. You can almost feel the colours on Rio’s logo are alive. And beside that, the typography is great!

If I had to choose another one, it would be Baku. Altough I didn’t liked the colours, but the logo made a good mix of the country with the Olympics. The best in fact. But again, the colours are horrible for such event.

  27. John Petrucci dit :

    Good.. I really appreciate.

  28. Simon dit :

I vote for Madrid. The logo refers to the spanish art. So cool:)
I also love the logo of chigago, even if it looks too much american…

Tokyo’s logo is almost the same as London’s logo for the 2012 olympic games!

  29. Simon dit :

    Rio is just okay…

The logos of Doha, Praha and Baku really suck! Look like they were made by an uninspired graphism designer 20 years ago… Hello we are in 2008!

  30. joão dit :

just another coment about Rio´s logo, the lines that over the mountains are a reference to the work of oscar nyemaier. The greatest brazilian architect, that has designed brasilia and the sambodromo in Rio.

  31. sandrar dit :

  32. John Foy dit :
